Erectile dysfunction can definitely have a strain on a relationship for all parties involved. Remember though, erectile dysfunction is an incredibly common issue. If your partner has erectile dysfunction, then you definitely want to be able to support them as it is definitely not easy for people with penises. However, sometimes it can be challenging to know how to do so.

So, how can you support your partner?

  1. It's not personal:

The number one thing to remember is that it is not about you. It's not because they aren't attracted to you or that you're not sexy enough. So, get that out of your head. And for people with erectile dysfunction it can be incredibly stressful, but remember that it can also be stressful for your partner so make sure that you also reassure them that it is not about them.

  1. Make sure that you talk about it:

Address the situation. Things always get worse and weirder if you don't talk about it, so make sure that you communicate. Ask your partner what they need, and let your partner know how you are feeling too. Most people with penises who have ED feel a lot of shame. So, it is very important that you talk through this, and appreciate that it is a delicate and sensitive subject.

  1. Be supportive

It is vital that you are empathetic, and that you try to understand how challenging this is for your partner. Respond to this with care and understanding, as your partner is probably very worried/frustrated with this.

  1. Try other things

You don't need to always have penetration to connect. Try more foreplay, and other ways to emotionally connect such as cuddling, kissing, or using toys.

  1. Come up with a plan:

Discuss with your partner possible ways to improve/deal with the situation. This could include STD testing, Toys, therapy, or going to a doctor. Or, maybe you want to play around more with foreplay. Whatever you want, make sure that you come up with a plan together, and most importantly keep communicating and stay patient.
