How to use Pads

Period products are really a matter of preference, I personally like pads, particularly after experiencing pelvic organ prolapse after the birth of my son. The reason being is that I don't want to insert anything into me, we've all heard the horror stories about the girl that accidentally left a tampon in too long! No sir, not for me!

Pads are easy, and nowadays there are reusable, eco-friendly options as well as pure cotton options that don't contain plastic or nasty chemicals, none of which should really be around your vagina in the first place!

Pads may sometimes feel a little like you're wearing a nappy, and sometimes become slightly uncomfortable and that is their downfall, however for me - pads work.

  • using pads is pretty simple, assess your flow and this will help you decide what kind of protection you need, for example if you have a heavy flow the first few days, you'll likely need a thicker pad and a larger over night pad, and for the last few days you may just need thin pantry liners, I tend to use period pants when my flow is lighter, underwear with a thin pad layer built in! These are machine washable and reusable!

  • Generally you will know when your pad needs to be changed but during the first day or two, when the flow is heaviest, some people may need to change as often as every hour and as long as every 6 hours.

  • When disposing of a pad make sure you use the correct public bins and at home, make sure the pad is wrapped in tissue or something similar and put in a closed bathroom bin that is not easy for children or pets to get into.

  • If you are using reusable pads, get yourself a waterproof wash bag, pop all used pads in here and zip it up, at the end of your period Chuck the bag and pads into your washing machine and wash at 40 degrees. You can also wash reusable nappies with your pads to save on loads, if you are doing that, or towels!
