For some reason, many people are still not entirely comfortable talking about menstruation, it is still very much a taboo subject. However, taboos can be a dangerous thing as it leads to myths, misunderstandings and misinformation. It is crucial that we debunk these myths to help people feel empowered and informed concerning menstruation.
Myth #1: You cannot get pregnant on your period
This is 100% not true. Do not stop using birth control or condoms when you're on your period, you can still get pregnant. Sperm can live in your body for up to five days, which means that any sperm that enters your body can remain alive throughout and after your period. So, you can get pregnant! Use protection, safety is sexy!
Myth #2: Periods are always on time
We've all been told that the menstrual cycle is 28 days. But this is just an average number. Your cycle can be longer or shorter than this. There are a number of factors that can effect your cycle length be it weight changes, emotions, stress, travel etc. So, always keep period products in your bag! You never know if you'll be early or late. In addition, late periods is not bad for your reproductive health!
Myth #3: You shouldn't exercise when on your period
This is false. You can still exercise on your period, in fact in some cases exercise can even relieve symptoms and increase your energy.
Myth #4: You can't use a tampon till your older
If you have your period, then you are old enough to use a tampon. However, if you are not comfortable with the idea of using a podcast, then use a product you are more comfortable with such as a sanitary pad.
Myth #5: Period blood is different from regular blood
Period blood isn't a different type of blood, just because it comes out of a vagina doesn't make it some big, bad scary thing. IT IS REGULAR BLOOD. If anything, period blood is actually less concentrated blood, containing less blood cells.
Myth #6: Only women can get a period
Once again, not true! Not every woman gets a period and similarly, transgender men and non-binary people may also have or not have periods. So don't assume!
