If you've never had period sex before, it can feel a bit overwhelming to think about. Period sex may raise some logisitical questions, but there is no scientific evidence that suggests that having period sex is harmful. Some people may prefer not to have sex on their periods, whilst others do. Either way, your feelings are perfectly normal and justified. Period sex can be messy but it can also be great. Some people may experience a surge in their libido and some people may experience more intense orgasms whilst on their period. There are also rumours that period sex and reduce menstrual cramps as when you orgasm your pelvic muscles contract and release, which can help alleviate cramping.
If you do wish to have sex on your period, but need a couple tips we've got you covered with our do's and don'ts of period sex!
Do:
- Remove any tampons before having sex. A forgotten tampon could get pushed further into the vagina and could lead to an infection.
- Pre-plan! You may want to place some towels on the bed and save your sheets. This will make you feel more comfortable about not causing too large a mess, and will make the clean up easier. Make sure to have some towels and tissues at the ready!
- Stick to light days. If you're going to have sex whilst on your period, it's best to do this when your flow is lighter. However, if a heavier flow isn't uncomfortable for you or your partner then go for it.
- Start with a missionary position. This position can lessen the blood flow as you are on your back.
- Spooning and side by side are also good positions and will reduce the mess.
- If you love going on top, have an extra towel at hand.
- Try shower sex. The constant flow of water will wash away the blood and so there will be less of a clean up afterwards.
- You could have a tampon in or menstrual cup if you want to have oral sex. But this is optional and not for everyone.
- If you are too worried about creating a mess, then you and your partner can mutually masturbate instead or even have anal sex if that is something that you are comfortable with. Sex isn't just about penetration!
- If you accidentally stain your sheets, you can remove them with cold water and a stain remover.
- Communicate with your partner! Ask what is most comfortable for them and vice versa. Start the communication before sex and keep it going during and after sex.
Don't:
- Do not assume that just because you are on your period you can't get pregnant, this is still possible. The same goes for STDs you can still get one on your period. so make sure to use birth control or another form of protection.
- Don't go too deep. The cervix is lower and more sensitive when menstruating.
- Even though oral sex is perfectly safe whilst on your period, you may want to avoid it if you don't want a mess or if your partner isn't entirely comfortable with this.
- Don't always assume that you are lubricated because of your period. If you've just removed a tampon this can reduce the lubrication in your vagina, so you may want to get some extra lube if this is the case.
- Do not keep period products in whilst having sex.
