As we all know, having sex on your period can be quite messy and troublesome but many of us may feel horny during this time due to hormonal changes. However, some people tend to avoid period sex due to the mess. But, there is a solution for this: the menstrual disc. Menstrual disc has been the talk of social media lately due to its advantages over most of the period products on the market. The menstrual disc is an insertable period product that is used to collect blood instead of absorbing it. Like the menstrual cup in terms of its function, menstrual disc still has some extra benefits. Menstrual cups sit in the vaginal canal using light suction to stay securely in place. Menstrual discs do not use suction, but sit higher in the vaginal fornix directly under the cervix and rest behind the pelvic bone. Menstrual discs allow no-mess period as the position up high in the vaginal fornix allows enough space in the vaginal canal for penetration while most other period products like tampons or menstrual cups will have to be removed prior to penetrative vaginal sex. As long as menstrual discs are inserted properly, you and your partner should not feel it.

How to insert menstrual disc: Wash hands thoroughly. Use water-based lubricant on the rim of the disc and vaginal opening for smoother insertion (optional). Adjust to the position that works for you, preferable vertical angle so it can cover the cervix (e.g: standing, sitting, squatting, etc.) Fold the disc to make it smaller for entry (e.g: C-fold, 7-fold, or the punch down fold) Insert the disc into the vagina and make sure to pass the pubic bone until it tucks in just above the bone.

Pros and cons of menstrual disc:

  • Allow no-mess period sex.
  • Do not disturb vaginal pH balance.
  • Can be worn for up to 12 hours.
  • There are many both reusable and disposable options for your preference.
  • Reduce the risk of infection or toxic shock syndrome (TSS).
  • Harder to insert or remove.
  • Risk of leakage during deep, intense sex.
